I could have sworn i posted something about this once before, but it seems to have vanished. Either way, many many moons ago, pre Ethosian Wars, when V’Ral was in the Forgotten Mess Universe a party named the Fallen Legion used to use Shadow Exp to perform crafting. i don’t remember a lot of crafting going on, but we did use it for crafting, and spells that consumed Exp.

In a effort to throttle exp/advancement by the DM, the party was getting about 50% exp off fair market value for its kills. After many long nights of grumbling about exp reduction over beer at Show-Mes, the concept of shadow exp was born. The remaining 50% exp went to what we called Shadow Exp, which was a reserve that could be used for non-level advancement related functions by the players.

I don’t recall ever discussing it, but does that still work the same way now that we are in the Manaverse? Do we want to keep that mechanic?

Incidentally, an alternate option, since the rules are opened up across d20 spectrum, at least within the Wizards, and Pathfinder rulesets, XP cost was dropped from magic item crafting in d20 Pathfinder/Piazo, around 2008, with the new adjustments to the ruleset. With crafting only costing time and money.

I have no memory of a global XP reduction by 50%. I did reduce listed CR on a per fight basis depending on what modification I may or may not have made to the monsters to make them an even challenge for the party.

I introduced Phantom XP at 50% simply to ensure that a crafter could not shit out everything they wanted basically at will due to excessive amounts of XP available. It did turn into not much of an issue because there was not a lot of crafting happening.

I honestly have not done a lot of any calculating on it again.
