You cannot make masterwork quality items him this fashion.
-
Im going to need a highlight of where it says you cant cause having just read through them it would appear you could as masterwork is not a magical item
Unless you mean “Creatures or magic items cannot be created or transmuted by the fabricate spell.”
in which case the wall is not a magic item it is simply a wall of iron
-
seems like anything IRON wouldn’t be masterwork jack shit… constantly rusting everytime you stab some git or even expose it to humidity…
AND fabricate would only make the blade and tang, as the crosspiece and hilt and wrapping are separate, as are the inlaid gems and engravings that qualify an item to be “Masterwork” class
(all magic items are considered masterwork items, ergo all the pretty happens before the enchantments are laid)
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/weapons.htm#masterworkWeapons
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/armor.htm#masterworkArmor
(line 4)coupled with the fact that you’re using quasi-real metal in the first place, which would wink out anytime you hit dispel/antimagic/deadmagic… yeah, thats the kind of product you want associated with your name…
to be fair (ta be faihhhh) as a GM i’d prolly allow a caster that had all the requisite skills AND the proper materials to use the fabricate spell as a magical SHORTCUT if he wanted to turn a pile of masterwork-grade hardened steel bars into bare sword blades. use another to premake crosspieces and/or unwrapped hilts. mebbe even allow him to take high-grade uncut gemstones and fabricate them into cut and shaped stones, provided he had the trained skills to do so.
cant see a way for fabricate to do the inlays or engraving tho… that’d still be elbow grease, as would assembling, polishing, wrapping and whatnot. prolly cut the build time in half or a quarter at the price of bumping up the material cost (instead of buying simple ingots your buying specialized and already forged/hardened bar stocks of masterwork quality)

@d20SRD said in Skills: Craft:
Creating Masterwork Items
You can make a masterwork item—a weapon, suit of armor, shield, or tool that conveys a bonus on its use through its exceptional craftsmanship, not through being magical. To create a masterwork item, you create the masterwork component as if it were a separate item in addition to the standard item. The masterwork component has its own price (300 gp for a weapon or 150 gp for a suit of armor or a shield) and a Craft DC of 20. Once both the standard component and the masterwork component are completed, the masterwork item is finished. Note: The cost you pay for the masterwork component is one-third of the given amount, just as it is for the cost in raw materials.

My interpretation of Wall of Iron is that it is permanent, not magical after summoned.

Trust me, I know…
But read the SRD version of the spell.
1e, specifically called this out.
2e is the same as 1e.
But the 3.0, 3.5, and SRD version specifically does not have that highlighted section.

Also found where @orc got the idea.
