      Spell Point System

Daerma Adventures uses a spell point system for all casters.

      • Maximum Spell Points = Spellcasting Ability * Spellcasting Class Level
        • Example: 1st level Cleric with 16 (+3) Wisdom: 1 * 3 = 3 SP
        • Example: 5th level Wizard with 18 (+4) Intelligence: 4 * 5 = 20 SP
        • Example: 10th level Bard with 20 (+5) Charisma: 10 * 5 = 50 SP
      • Spells cost 1 spell point per spell level to cast.
        • If you want to cast a spell at a higher caster level you have to pump more spell points in it appropriately.
      • Cantrips cost 0 spell points to cast unless you try to cast it higher.
        • All casters get a small number of cantrips (based on the class descriptions) that they can cast at will.
      • Spells can not be cast at a level higher than the maximum spell level you can normally cast.
        • The Heighten Spell feat can change this restriction.
      • Casters can ready the number of spells per day as listed in the PHB.
        • A caster can have as many spells as they want in their spell book or divine selection.
        • A caster may spend 1 round per spell level in mediation at anytime to change one of their readied spells.
        • Powermasters have surpassed this restriction and can cast any spell they know without any preparation.

        Original 5e post for posterity.

Using the terms from the core rules, a player calculates their maximum Spell Point total with the below formula.

Maximum Spell Points = Spellcasting Ability * Spellcasting Class Level

        Examples:
        5th level Wizard with 18 (+4) Intelligence: 4 * 5 = 20 SP
        1st level Cleric with 16 (+3) Wisdom: 1 * 3 = 3 SP
        10th level Bard with 20 (+5) Charisma: 10 * 5 = 50 SP

        Question 1 to the players:
Does this feel like a smooth flow? Is it too high or too low? If so what would you suggest for a tweak?

An example: A 5th level wizard with an 18 int gets 20 spells points.

        A non spell point wizard would cast 2x 3rd, 3x 2nd, and 4x 1st for a total of 9 spells cast.

A spell point wizard would be able to cast any variety of spells such as 20x 1st, 10x 2nd, or 6x 3rd. Potentially more powerful but they would also be out of SP quite quickly.

For a more balanced comparison if the SP wizard cast the same 9 spells as the standard wizard, the SP wizard would still have 4 SP left. This would allow one more 3rd and one more 1st, or any other combination totaling 4 SP.

This process will not be changing with our switch to the 3.5e ruleset. Spell Points and casting will still work this way.

I updated this post with the rules listed on the main daerma.com page so that both places state the exactly the same thing.
